摘要: Although the fungal endophyte-grass association was first reported more than 60 years ago (Sampson, 1933), animal health problems related to this association were not connected until many years later (Bacon et al, 1977). Numerous studies since that time have shown a negative impact of alkaloids produced by endophyte-infected grasses on animal disorders. The importance of the endophyte-grass association in the grasslands of China is largely unknown. A large portion of western China's agriculture is centered on grazing of natural pasture, since rainfall in those areas is too little for conventional cultivation. Virtually nothing is known of the occurrence or impact of endophytes on the animal production in these remote, untraveled regions. In 1995, we conducted a survey of endophyte presence in forage grass species of Xinjiang in order to estimate its potential impact on animal production in the area. Tn the process, we hoped to discover new endophyte host species, not previously reported in the literature.
